News from CROI 2026 coming soon

The 33rd Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2026) is taking place in Denver, US, from 22 to 25 February.

CROI is an annual scientific conference and was established to “provide a forum for basic scientists and clinical investigators to present, discuss, and critique their investigations into the epidemiology and biology of human retroviruses and associated diseases”.

CROI 2026 will feature research and discussions on:

  • new insights into the HIV reservoir and the potential for an HIV cure
  • new drugs which may work for months at a time
  • the impact of funding cuts across the globe.

The CROI 2026 preliminary programme is available online, where you can find details of the conference’s plenary sessions, interactive symposia, oral abstracts, posters and workshops.

“The best and most consequential original research on HIV and related conditions will define the science at the conference.” CROI website

Glossary

epidemiology

The study of the causes of a disease, its distribution within a population, and measures for control and prevention. Epidemiology focuses on groups rather than individuals.

cure

To eliminate a disease or a condition in an individual, or to fully restore health. A cure for HIV infection is one of the ultimate long-term goals of research today. It refers to a strategy or strategies that would eliminate HIV from a person’s body, or permanently control the virus and render it unable to cause disease. A ‘sterilising’ cure would completely eliminate the virus. A ‘functional’ cure would suppress HIV viral load, keeping it below the level of detection without the use of ART. The virus would not be eliminated from the body but would be effectively controlled and prevented from causing any illness.

reservoir

The ‘HIV reservoir’ is a group of cells that are infected with HIV but have not produced new HIV (latent stage of infection) for many months or years. Latent HIV reservoirs are established during the earliest stage of HIV infection. Although antiretroviral therapy can reduce the level of HIV in the blood to an undetectable level, latent reservoirs of HIV continue to survive (a phenomenon called residual inflammation). Latently infected cells may be reawakened to begin actively reproducing HIV virions if antiretroviral therapy is stopped.

oral

Refers to the mouth, for example a medicine taken by mouth.

aidsmap will be reporting on key research presented at CROI 2026, publishing news online and sending out three summary bulletins by email (in English only): one during the week of the conference and two the following week.

If you would like to receive these bulletins and any future emails from aidsmap, make sure you’ve signed up to aidsmap’s mailing list. This mailing list is held by Terrence Higgins Trust.

All of our CROI 2026 news stories and bulletins will be published on our conference webpage.

aidsmap changes lives by sharing independent, accurate and accessible information about HIV – you can help by sharing links to research presented at the conference. Please feel free to:
