Health Literacy Month | Asthma & Allergy Associates, P.C.

October is Health Literacy Month, a time dedicated to promoting the importance of improving public health. This is defined by the Institute of Medicine in their report “Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion,” refers to an individual’s capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic information and services necessary for making informed health decisions.

Health literacy encompasses the ability to understand complex medical concepts and apply decision-making skills in health situations. This includes understanding prescription labels, appointment slips, medical brochures, doctor’s directions, and navigating complex healthcare systems. To be health literate, individuals may also need to be visually, computer, information, and numerically literate.

How it Started

Health Literacy Month was started in 1999 by the National Library of Medicine. Initially observed on October 20th, the celebration now takes place throughout the entire month of October. Although some groups may observe National Health Literacy Month in September, the official observance remains in October. This initiative raises awareness of the importance and promotes better communication between healthcare providers and patients.

Why Health Literacy Matters

It was created to highlight the importance of clear communication in healthcare. This affects everyone and can greatly improve health outcomes. The National Library of Medicine recognized this and integrated health literacy into its public health messaging to improve better communication

Asthma and Allergy Associates Celebrates Health Literacy Month

At Asthma and Allergy Associates, we understand the critical role that health literacy plays in patient care. Research shows that patients and families remember only about 30 percent of what they hear during doctor visits. To ensure clear understanding of health assessments and treatment plans, our entire medical team—front desk, transcriptionists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians—works together on communication.

Asthma and Allergy Associates implemented a computerized medical record system three years ago, ensuring it could print patient plans. We also mail consultation letters to referring doctors and patients for detailed review of assessments and plans. Additionally, we offer resources for vision-impaired and non-English-speaking patients.

Asthma Action Plans and Community Engagement

Every year, Asthma and Allergy Associates helps hundreds of patients develop personalized Asthma Action Plans and Food Allergy Action Plans. Our commitment to goes beyond the clinic—Dr. Soteres and Dr. Webb frequently volunteer at health advocacy groups and schools. Dr. Soteres has also been a keynote speaker at events like the District 20 Food Allergy Summit and MOSAIC in Colorado Springs.

Final Thoughts

Our team of physicians, immunologists, and allergists are deeply invested in the well-being of the local community and work hard to educate others about health literacy and medical care. If you have any questions or would like information about our public speaking events, feel free to contact us. Asthma and Allergy Associates is here to support you in managing your health and your needs.
